Winter Cup to begin the 2025 gymnastics season

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (February 18, 2025) – Featuring two Paris Olympic medalists, USA Gymnastics’ Winter Cup will kick off the 2025 domestic season Friday through Sunday at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville.

Winter Cup will serve as the first elite gymnastics competition of the year, with National Team berths and international assignments on the line. Held in conjunction with the 2025 Nastia Liukin Cup and Elite Team Cup, the weekend will feature the country’s top elite and development gymnasts.

Winter Cup

Headlining Winter Cup entries are Olympic women’s team gold medalist Hezly Rivera (Oradell, N.J./WOGA Gymnastics) and Olympic men’s team bronze medalist Frederick Richard (Stoughton, Mass./University of Michigan), who each earned their honors at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris last summer.

Top returnees from the 2024 Winter Cup women’s field include Olympic replacement athlete and 2023 Pan American Championships all-around gold medalist Tiana Sumanasekera (Pleasanton, Calif.) and 2024 all-around fifth-place finisher Dulcy Caylor (Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre). 2024 junior all-around champion Claire Pease (Sunnyvale, Texas/WOGA Gymnastics) will compete as a senior this year, leaving the junior title open to other athletes including 2024 Winter Cup junior all-around bronze medalist Addy Fulcher (Gastonia, N/C./Bull City Gymnastics).

Challenging Richard for the men’s all-around title will be Stanford teammates Riley Loos (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), the 2024 Winter Cup all-around bronze medalist, and Colt Walker (Austin, Texas), the 2024 U.S. parallel bars bronze medalist. 2024 Olympic replacement athlete Patrick Hoopes (Lehi, Utah/U.S. Air Force Academy) will compete on pommel horse after winning the 2024 Winter Cup and NCAA titles in the event and posting the highest score at the Olympic Trials. After winning the Winter Cup junior all-around gold medal in 2024, Junnosuke Iwai (Lewisville, Texas/Texas Dreams Gymnastics) returns as a senior to join in the chase.

Competing athletes will be vying for all-around titles, international assignments and, on the men’s side, spots on the Senior National Team. Competition will span three days and will include junior and senior men’s and women’s sessions. Based on Winter Cup performances, athletes will be selected to participate at various international competitions, including the International Gymnix March 8-9 in Canada, the DTB Pokal Team Challenge and Mixed Cup March 27-30 in Germany, and FIG World Cup competitions.

Nastia Liukin Cup/Elite Team Cup

The 2025 Nastia Liukin Cup will see competition from junior and senior Level 10 women’s artistic gymnasts who qualified from the 2025 Nastia Liukin Cup Series. The event is set for Sunday, February 23 and will feature 44 qualified athletes, including two from the accompanying 2025 Kentucky Winter Classic also held in the Kentucky International Convention Center.

The Elite Team Cup serves as a team competition for the top junior athletes from each of the six men’s regions in the U.S. Regional rosters will be made up of eight athletes and each Region will vie for the 2025 team title.
